I was particularly excited because I normally work on Sundays, but my new job allows me to be able to take a couple Sundays off a month (huzzah!). We decided to go in the morning in hopes that the goods wouldn't be too picked over.

When we got there, we realized that our expectations were a smidgen too high lol. We were hoping to see more knit and crochet items amongst the quilted items, but nope. There was one lady that had a few crochet hats and... nah... So we wandered around between the tables displaying some really really pretty quilts, but of course they were WAY out of our budgets. Which was completely understandable, by the way.

After a few minutes, one of the volunteers told us about the make-and-take craft room they had set up. For $5 you could make either a set of napkin rings with felt flowers on or an angel made from a men's neck tie. I chose to make the tie angel and it was surprisingly a lot of fun. Mostly because I really got in to the details of the face, hair, decorations, and whatnot. I was enjoying the craft so much that the facilitator took pictures of me throughout. Cherie resisted the urge to make one, but she definitely lended a hand with mine. I'll share the instructions below if you are interested. It will make a really cute children's Christmas craft.

All in all, the Quilt and Craft sale was nice. I almost want to figure out who I need to talk to about possibly participating in the sale next year. I could surely give that crochet hat lady a run for it lol.

Anywho, I wanted to share something that made me smile. What's something nice you did this past weekend?Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-41125913301443215692016-10-24T10:00:00.000-04:002016-10-24T10:00:08.269-04:00Little AngelSometimes God sends a child to brighten your crummy day. That is what happened to me last Thursday.

He was an energetic 4 year old and just what I needed to clear the clouds from over my head.

Thank you, Noah, for unknowingly being a little God-sent angel.Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-87231949113545213892016-10-10T08:00:00.000-04:002016-10-10T08:00:17.595-04:00On Behalf of Delron

Sitting on a bed watching tv.
Changing my shirt.
Wearing cologne.
Buying shoes.
Taking a shower.
Changing the tv channel.
Having clean clothes.

Being looked at and treated like a person.

He listed all these things to me as we sat on the curb outside 7-Eleven on Colonial Drive that Monday night. I asked him how long he's been homeless - he said, "it's been a minute." His shoes were cheap flip flops worn nearly through. He spoke of his family and how his ex-wife sold the house when he was in jail and now he has nowhere to go. His voice broke when he mentioned his children and I could see him deflating. A father with a son in need and no means to help him.

He said, "I don't talk about how hard being homeless is because it hurts so much. And sometimes I think about suicide but I tell myself I gotta keep putting one foot in front of the other. I can't give up." I agreed.

Between escaping tears he told me he couldn't remember the last time anyone sat and talked to him like an everyday person. He spoke of the judgemental looks he gets regularly and how he doesn't want to beg but he has no other option. He told me about the church folk that are quick to throw out an "I'll pray for you" but slow to even give food.

I don't know how long we sat... how long he talked... how long I listened, but it was needed. Since then, I've passed that 7-Eleven numerous times and looked for him each time but haven't seen him again. I hope he's still putting one foot in front of the other. I hope he is still talking to God and knowing that no matter how small we feel, He is the God Who Sees Us. I hope he finds a way out of his current situation. I hope he holds on to hope.Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-9812881279773635052016-09-22T16:27:00.000-04:002016-09-22T16:27:19.815-04:00Just a Little Life UpdateI promise I want to write on here lol! I've just been absolutely terrible at executing the blogging plans I've been writing. I mean, I plan out what posts I want to do for a few weeks and what photos I'll need for them, and then I just don't follow through. -___- I'm ashamed of myself... especially after my recent declaration to be a better blogger.

Anywho, I decided that instead of writing one of my many planned post ideas today, I would do a little life update. What have I been up in the last month or so? August and thus far into September have been quite busy for me. I've been getting more hours at the studio which means I've had to get up and ride to work with Lamar so I would have the car. I have been doing SO MUCH DRIVING! Literal hours every day I have to work and it's very taxing. But hey, do it for the money right? I am going to be the happiest person ever when we get a second car, but I'm thankful for the one we have because it has been the champ, carting me back and forth from Apopka to Clermont to Orlando and back again (even though it's a total gas guzzler). So yeah, lots of car time has been going on, which means I've had lots of time to listen to knitting podcasts and dream of new projects.

Let's see, what else can I tell you about the last month and a half...
- I've gone to knit night at Sip & Knit twice!
- Filmed and posted my first crafting video podcast or craftcast as I've dubbed it. (click -here- to go watch it)
- Finished my first knitted garment (a teeny baby sweater *.*)
- Discovered a new yarn shop in Clermont... just a lovely explosion of artsy yarny goodness!
- Purchased and received some beautiful yarns
- Survived singing in our small (and I mean tiny) young adult "choir"... does a group of 6 or 7 count as a choir?? Anyway, staying in that alto lane is quite the struggle.
- Expanded my garden to include collard greens and they are growing really well! I should've planted greens a long time ago! They are just boosting my garden-ego like none other!

So yeah, that's my recent history in a nutshell. Early mornings, late nights, driving, working, yarn... adulting. Hopefully, I can get myself back into the swing of posting regular content up here. If you are still following and reading this blog, what kind of posts would you like me to do? What topic would you like me to write about or projects you'd like to see? Please let me know!Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-71342923695787559422016-09-06T18:00:00.000-04:002016-09-06T18:00:00.315-04:00Bible Journaling Part 1

Since one of my 30 in 30 goals is to finish reading the whole Bible (ps.
not gonna make it lol), I've ventured into the wonderful world of Bible
journaling and Illustrated Faith. Yay!

Outside Cover. (Materials used: acrylic paint, 4x6 project life journaling card, dollar tree letter stickers)

At first I wanted to get an actual "journaling Bible" with the wide
margin and fancy thick paper, but they carry quite a hefty price tag at
$50. Needless to say, that is way out of my budget for a new
hobby/craft. Instead, I went to my local goodwill and bought a
paperback English Standard Version Bible for 99 cents ^.^

Inside Cover. (Materials used: watercolor pencils, watercolor paint, black precision pen)

As you can see, I created a cover for the front and water-colored a bit on the opening page. That first 'entry' was the hardest. I mean, as a child, I was taught NeVeR to write in the Bible unless you were highlighting scriptures. So the idea of drawing in the Bible was a complete departure from anything I've ever done.

Genesis 1:31 (Materials used: gel matte medium, gelatos, acrylic paint, gold paint pen, black precision pen)

Now because I got a regular Bible, the pages are quite thin. This problem let me to pick up a few mixed media supplies. I purchased a bottle of gel matte medium from Michaels and that is perfect for coating the pages and preparing the for painting or whatever kind of media I decide to put on them.

Genesis 9:11-17 (Materials used:gel matte medium, acrylic paint, gold and silver paint pens, yellow marker)

I also got a pack of gelatos pigment sticks, a container texture paste and stencils, watercolor pencils, and various kinds of paints to use in my entries.

Exodus 3:13-14 (Materials used:gel matte medium, gelatos, sharpie)

I've enjoyed using acrylic and watercolor paints on the different pages,
depending on what "feel" I'm going for. For instance, acrylic paints
will cover the print on the pages completely while watercolors or
gelatos stay transparent.
I will say, I'm not very good at using the watercolor pencils yet. I'm having a hard time getting them to blend properly. But no worries! There are plenty other scriptures to practice on and be inspired by.
My dream, when it comes to my Bible Journal, is to fill it up and keep it on our coffee table next to the family Bible Lamar and I got as a wedding gift. That way whenever friends and family come to visit, they can see and explore it. I think that will be awesome!Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-45046230789282323132016-09-01T15:30:00.000-04:002016-09-01T15:30:22.121-04:00Great Gifty Friends!I was beautifully blessed with some fun gifts from friends this past weekend ^.^

My friend Tiff gave me a couple samples of tea (Wild Chaild and Sweet Tangerine). I drank the tangerine one already and it was delicious!!! I will def be buying a box of that asap! She also gave me a cutting from her mint plant. All the excitement is mine!!! I'm going to plant the cutting and brew tea from the leaves ^.^ I keep envisioning myself drinking nice cups of tea from my huge mint bush while sitting on the front porch during a nice summer rain shower. That sounds like a wonderful Sabbath afternoon...

The other gift came from my friend, Erica. She found a bag of fabric while cleaning out her garage and gave me the whole thing! o.O What what!!! Talk about an awesome crafty gift ^.^ There were quite a few large pieces that I can use for bag making and also some that will be really nice for garments. I'm so excited to dig into this new stash soon!

The Wonderful Beautiful Practical World of Project Bags!!!

No more ziplock bags for me ^.^

A project back is a zippered, draw string, or other type of bag specifically to keep a crochet/knit project in. Kinda makes sense huh? Anywho, I first decided to make one to house my California travel project. So I dug through my fabric stash and found a couple prints to use.

For the pattern, I just googled instruction for making a zippered bag. It came out pretty good for a first go :) And now I'm completely smitten with the idea of keeping my things in project bags.

Now, of course, I wanted to make more for new projects, and because these little bags were in my mind - I was bitten by the fabric stashing bug. I started gathering fat quarter cuts and bits from Joann's remnant basket and jumped right into the sewing. This time I used Nicole of Hue Loco's Holiday Bag pattern. The pattern was written very well and the accompanying tutorial video helped with any questions I ran into.

A couple days after starting my second project bag, I had 4 new bags made! I love how they came out and I've been putting them to work regularly ^.^ I do want to make a couple more in a larger size for projects bigger than socks. I've put together some preliminary fabric combos and hopefully I'll get to work on those in the coming weeks. Well... after I buy a zipper foot for my sewing machine because I've been struggling along without one so far.
Getting back into sewing has definitely rekindled my love for the craft. I've been daydreaming of all the new clothes I could make with a bigger work space. (I'm currently sewing on the corner of the dining room table.)

So yeah!! Happy crafting to me! ^.^Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-35301530117571492512016-08-11T10:00:00.000-04:002016-08-11T10:00:06.301-04:00Lamar and Caleisha do CaliforniaDuring the first week of July, Lamar and I went to California for our friend Sheree's wedding. We arrived the morning of the first and stayed until the 7th. Our flight out was scheduled for 7:40 am and I was sooo stressed that something was going to go wrong all the way until we were in our seats on the plane, lol. ^.^ I discovered that travel is def an anxiety trigger, and that sucks because I love traveling!
After we arrived in LA, we went to In-n-Out Burger and I ordered cheese fries... which came to me with a cheese slice on top. >.< #fail We stayed in a hotel out in Whittier which turned out to be WAY too far from everything we wanted to do lol (we'll do better with hotel choice next time we go anywhere).
Breakfast for day two was at Heavenly Pancake somewhere in San Fernando. The food was great & I bought a mug ^.^ After eating we spent hours running around looking for a pair of nude flats for Sheree's wedding. I'd asked her if her service was going to be long and she told me to expect an hour and a half... heels were not going to work! Later that afternoon we went to Sheree and Justin's rehearsal dinner which was really nice.
Wedding Day! Sheree and Justin got married on July 3rd. It was quite a nice outdoor service, although all the bridesmaids were in direct sun lol. We were saved by Lamar when he brought us fans. I love that guy! He and I spent cocktail hour and reception running around making sure things were going smoothly. At one point, Sheree's dad pulled me aside to thank us for all our hard work *.* Lamar and I kept saying to each other that we should start a wedding day of coordination company.
July 5th was our "do everything we want in LA" day. We went to the Griffith Observatory to see the Hollywood sign, but to be completely honest, I was WAY more excited about the Observatory itself. I think I actually lost my breath a couple times lol.

After the Observatory, we went down to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We took lots of photos, bought souvenirs, I got trapped in an awkward conversation with Sonic the Hedgehog, and we saw the skinniest Superman ever to walk the planet!
We ended the day in the best way possible (in my opinion)... with a trip to Da Poetry Lounge! Shihan (one of my favorite poets from college) was taking money at the door and I almost squealed. Literally. Lamar wasn't even phased lol! He shared a photo on snapchat with the caption "wife geeking out because Shihan took our money to get in Da Poetry Lounge." I'm so glad he understands lol!! The open mic was pretty awesome and reeeeally made me want to get back into writing. I know it'll come back around.
We spent the 6th at Knott's Berry Farms. We rode almost all of the roller coasters and played an underwater laser gun game. Lamar absolutely WHOOPED me! In my defense, I was looking at the target for the wrong gun... come to think of it, that is a horrible defense lol! Anyway, we had a great time.

One thing that I wanted to do no matter what, was see a west coast sunset. So after leaving Knott's Berry Farms, we navigated to the nearest beach which was aptly named, Sunset Beach. We got there in time to set up our cameras for photos and a nice time-lapse of the sunset (video at the end of this post).

IT. WAS. SO. FLIPPING. COLD!!! What's up with thaaat? Well, despite the frigid temp, it was a beautiful sunset.

Our last day in California was July 7th and we stuffed that day full of activities too :) We left the hotel in the morning and went to Downtown LA. Lamar planned the whole day's activities. We would start at the Last Bookstore, then go to the LA Museum of the Holocaust, and finish up with a trip to Venice Beach before heading to the airport.

The Last Bookstore was uh-MAZE-ing!!! And the fact that Gathered yarn shop upstairs made it even better! I didn't buy any yarn, although I kinda wish I had in hindsight. Oh well. The LA Museum of the Holocaust was so heavy. I kept thinking, while walking through the exhibits, "who made you god?" ...sigh...

Lunch was served at Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles. Lamar got Obama's Special and loved it! I got side orders of mac & cheese and cornbread. I was not prepared for the thickness of the cornbread... I need to get that recipe because that cornbread... THAT cornbread... THAT CORNBREAD!!! ::falls out in the floor:: Was delicious.

Venice Beach was fun. We saw some street performers and a couple guys who should just stop lifting weights... I mean y'all win. Just stop now lol. And, I was prepared for the beach breeze with a hoodie! We stayed at the beach for a touch too long and ended up having to rush to the airport.

We made it onto our plane and settled in for a 3 hour overnight flight to Ohio, a 3 hour layover, and then a short flight back to Orlando. Lamar slept through the whole thing. I, on the other hand, couldn't probably because of a combo of trip anxiety and turbulence. At one point, I looked out the window to see the sun rising and I was soo confused at what time it was. Jet lag is real lol!

We got home the morning of the 8th and it felt so good to be back. Our week in California was so packed full of activities that I felt (and still feel) like I need another vacation to recover ^.^ So yeah! Cali was great. We got lots of souvenirs. I'm so glad that Lamar and I were able to have that experience together.
I planned to keep up with blogging, but for whatever reason, I failed totally! Anyway, now because of my slacker self, I'm here doing a double month in review. Let me tell you... going back and filling in all the activities of two months was not fun! It's a really good thing that I'm pretty consistent with posting on social media or I'd be at a loss. So here we go! Time traveling back through June & July!!!

Highlights
7/1: Lamar and I flew to California for our friend Sheree's wedding. It was my first time flying cross country (technically 2nd but the first time I was like 3). Five hour is a long time to be on a plane. It was a little unnerving, but looking at the map and following the flight path was cool.
7/4-7: Lamar and Caleisha do California! We did all the touristy thing, spent time with my family, and made lots of memories. It was great.
7/10: Two days after getting home from Cali, we were back on the road to Miami for Lamar's god-brother's wedding. And turned out one of my cousins was a friend of the groom, so I got to see him too. That was pretty cool... until he pulled me on to the dance floor during the reception -___- I am not a dancer! It was easily the most awkward thing I've done in a reeeeeally long time lol. (Of course Lamar got it on video ::covers face in embarrassment::)
Recently, I did a little bit of yarny online and in-store shopping! Yay! Normally I don't do much online shopping because I enjoy the instant gratification of taking my new toys home right away. But back when I was knitting my first hat a friend on instagram suggested I order some bamboo needles from amazon. So I did :)

I purchased a set of 16 inch and 40 inch circular needles from amazon
for less than $15 Huzzah! Now I have no excuse not to try new and
challenging projects. So far, I've started one new project with these needles and the tips were a little splintery, but that was fixed by buffing them with a nail file.

While I was waiting for the needles to come in, I decided to pick up some new sock yarn. I purchased all three skeins from Joann's. I can't make up my mind on which colorway I'm most excited about. I just wish I could knit faster ^.^
Today's work in progress project doesn't have a name... It came about because I had one skein of Martha Stewart Extra Soft Wool Blend yarn and I wanted to make something that would take up the whole thing.

So I took to Ravelry and browsed what other people had made with one ball. I came across a "Variation on a Basic Hat" by a user called Gmax4. I started knitting the hat and quickly got frustrated by the stiffness and wonkiness of the cord and I kept saying, "I'm gonna rip this out..." But as you can see I didn't.

The little lace pattern is from GmaX4's pattern, but the other mods are mine. I did a 2x2 ribbing instead of 1x1 and my finished hat will have a total of 4 lace repeats instead of 3 as in the original hat. I may even end up putting in more repeats because I want it to be slouchy enough to handle all my hair ^.^ Currently, I'm up to the point to add in the third lace repeat.

One thing I've really been aware of during working on this project is how much the type of needles affect the knitting. I'm using some needles I picked up at Joann's for like $3 after my coupon. Since I'm working the hat magic loop, I've been fighting the cable because it just wants to curl up on itself. Then in the lace repeats I have to do k2tog (knit 2 together) and because the needle tips are so blunt, it is quite the struggle getting the needle behind two stitches at a time. But I'm pressing through. I'm assuming this hat will be finished within the coming week and I'll be able to add another item to my stack of hand-knits!Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-36207759820499043092016-06-21T17:45:00.001-04:002016-06-29T12:25:41.727-04:00Garden Update: Leafy HappinessAlmost exactly 2 months ago, I wrote about the newest additions to my container garden. So far all's been well on the pesky bug front. My green bean plant had a run in with a snail and now has some snail trail scarring along a few of the leaves, but no horrid damage. I'm being super ultra vigilant when inspecting each plant for other pests and bugs. Fingers crossed this batch of plants will be more fruitful than the last.

Here is my green bean... bush... This is actually quite a few separate plants that I'm keeping in one pot together. The one that is currently bearing, is the sole survivor of the "Green Bean Ball" ^.^ Originally, there were a bunch of surviving sprouts from that ball, but then we got a big storm and there was so much rain that most of the sprouts couldn't handle all the water. Anywho, shortly after removing the fallen, I decided to plant the leftover seeds into the pot. The newer sprouts are the ones around the edges.

Next, we have my lavender plant. It has grown quite a lot! My dream is to get it large enough to be able to collect and dry the leaves and make a rinse for my hair. That would be awesome. Plus, I've seen many recipes for lavender lemonade which would taste pretty good I think. Summer plans maybe??

Soo... I thought this was my bell pepper plant for the whole first month of having these sprouts ^.^ As they grew up, I kept thinking... These look a lot like cucumbers... And finally when the flower bloomed, I realized that I had mislabeled the seedlings. LOL!!! Gardener Fail! They look like they might be struggling a bit, so I'm going to re-pot them into bigger pots and give them some new trellises to climb. Crossing all the fingers and toes that I get my one cucumber this year!!!

Here are the actual bell peppers... The whole time I was looking at the cucumber plant, I was looking at this one like "That's a weird looking cucumber plant..." I'm glad I finally came to my senses ^.^ But in my defense... the leaves do look similar.

**EDIT** Turns out these are cucumbers lol! As they've gotten bigger they're showing their cucumber-ness. I know I planted bell peppers, but I haveno idea what happened to them. This has been a really weird start to the garden.

I decided to also plant some beefsteak tomato seeds. Normally I don't like tomatoes because of the slimy bits inside, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of that in this particular type of tomato. Hopefully that is. Anyway, they are shooting up quite quickly and they're making me feel like a very good gardener ^.^

Lastly, we have my basil plant! This baby has been with me since last year! Recently, we've been fighting the mealybug war, and consistent bug spray and water spray has gotten/kept the pest population down. Also, there are a LOT of seeds that can be harvested from the dried flowering parts right now. I'm thinking about maybe planting them and starting what would be another 3rd generation basil plant.

So there you have it! That's my current garden roster :) Lots of potential veggies and some aromatic herbs. I have some empty pots that are begging for new things to be planted in them, so maybe I'll go pick up some plants from walmart or home depot...

What plants should I add to my garden? Comment below!Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-55909405187243543052016-06-17T16:00:00.000-04:002016-06-17T16:00:15.489-04:00Finally I'm Finished: First KnitsI have been knitting a whole lot more over the past couple months and I'm happy to say it's been very enjoyable. As a crocheter, trying knitting was like going to the dark side lol! I think the hardest thing so far has been regulating my yarn tension. When I started my stitches would be super tight and hard to work. That was also making my hands feel very cramped most of the time. So to remedy this, I went online for tips on learning how to hold the yarn looser, but still keep everything neat. I'm still playing around with how I hold the yarn, but it's going well.

I wanted to share my first few knitted finished projects today. All three of these pieces have been finished within the last 3-4 months. I'm so proud of myself ^.^

First, we have my "I Thought I was a Ravenclaw Socks." I showed the first sock of this pair in mid-March and finished the second sock at the end of March. They were knit for the Harry Potter KAL but I didn't win anything. le'sigh... better luck next time! [click -here- for the progress post!] Anyhow, these socks are so comfy and not at all as hot as I expected them to be. I've worn them to work in my sneakers and they did very well. They also survived their first machine washing ^.^ I count this as an awesome win! I worked them cuff down and using a long circular needle for the magic loop method. These socks took me about a month to complete.

The next thing I cast on my needles was the Seaforth Hat. I mentioned this hat a couple posts back when I talked about my needle adjacent projects (projects that I want to start). This hat was SUCH the learning experience! I learned how to knit regularly on circular needles (not magic loop), I learned how to read a basic lace chart, I learned how to do yarn overs... even though I found out after finishing the hat that all my yarn overs were wrapped the wrong way, but whatevs! This is a hat pattern that I will surely be making again. I want to do it in a smoother yarn next time. This hat was made with Impeccable worsted weight yarn from Michaels. Next time I think I'll use simply soft or something like that. This hat took me less than a week to complete.

Third knit item is another pair of socks. This time, I knit the socks toe up magic loop. I really enjoyed going toe up because that meant I knew exactly when to start the heel and then I could knit as long as I wanted for the leg without the pressure of maybe running out of yarn. At first, these were to be socks for myself, but once I finished the heel I realized the foot was a bit baggy. Turned out they fit Lamar perfectly. -___- And that's how he got his first pair of hand-knit socks. *shrug* He likes them and said they are so comfy that he forgot he was wearing them ^.^ The new thing I learned with this project was how to do wrap and turn short rows and how to knit two at a time socks. I decided to do them two at a time because I felt like they were taking forever once I got up to the leg. I don't think I really care for two at a time... people were saying it makes things go faster, but I'm still on the fence. These socks took me about a month and a week to complete.

My last knit project is... yep... another pair of socks! Lol! I wanted to try my hand at worsted weight socks so I cast on a pair to give to my friend Tiff for her birthday. I think I really like worsted weight socks! They were so fast! Only... I doubt I'd be able to wear them in shoes... These socks were knit one at a time, cuff down on magic loop. I used some yarn from my stash and actually finished most of the ball. I love using out my stash! This project forced me to learn how to correct a sizing problem. The first sock I knit turned out to be about 1.5 inches too short, so I had to undo the toe and continue knitting on the foot to make the sock the correct measurement. Then I had to reknit the toe. It was a little nerve wracking pulling out the stitches, but I was able to get everything back on the needles properly and continue working. These socks took me about a week and a half to complete.

There you have it! My first few knitted projects!! I feel like each one of these projects has made me learn new techniques. Whenever I came across a problem, I went straight to youtube to search "how to..." and that was really helpful. The next knit project that I want to cast on will most likely be the Ventura Shawl that I mentioned in the needle adjacent projects post. I tried it after finishing the Seaforth, but I couldn't get it right. That's when I found out I had been making the yarn overs wrong. Next time I think I'll get it!

I hope you liked seeing my newly created pieces :) Are you learning any new skills or learning new things within your hobbies? Yay! We spent the day at Wet & Wild getting on all the water rides and having a good ol' time ^.^

Anywho, I have been thinking about what to write for this anniversary post all week. I thought maybe I'll do a list of songs that remind me of Lamar or another questionnaire. Or maybe I'll just show photos from the day. After quite a bit of thinking, I've decided to write about a girl we saw at the park.

She was in line in front of me on two rides and I noticed her tattoos. The first was a constellation and the other was a semicolon.

"A
semicolon is used when the author could've ended a sentence, but
chose not to. You are the author and the sentence is your life." [click
-here- for more info about Project Semicolon]

Then I noticed her scars.

Seeing this girl made me reflect on my own mental health struggles and triumphs. It also made me think about how blessed I am to have someone as caring and compassionate as Lamar. In our years together, he has always tried to understand what I'm feeling when my moods swing. He always asks questions to prompt me to try and explain what anxiety feels like... what the downswings feel like. He will even drag me out of the bed if need be, lol.

Seeing her made me remember my scars. My burns. My dark days. My promise to keep up the fight.

Seeing her with her boyfriend made me think about how we are not islands. We are not ever truly alone in whatever our individual struggles are. We are never too broken to be loved. There are times I think back to the poem I was reciting right before Lamar proposed and I remember the very real worries I had and sometimes still have, "Will you still love me depressed? Will you throw me a life line? Will you count out reasons to smile? Will you remind me of the good in life? Will you still love me?" And every time these worries come up, I see his goofy smile or something that reassures me...

Of course, I will. What kind of a silly question is that?!
A lovey is a small security blanket with a doll or stuffed animal head and arms. It's a very cute idea and of course I took the challenge! We did some brainstorming on colors and design and soon the lovey was underway. The colors she chose were pink, purple, and a dash of teal. We went with a star-shaped "dress" for the lovey and a flat chevron pattern for the matching blanket. So after hours of drawing designs, researching how to shape a doll head, inserting individual hairs, and crocheting back and forth on the blanket... I can now present to you the finished set!!!! Woo hooo!!! (Please forgive the super harsh light, I took these outside in the afternoon the day before delivering the set to the birthday girl.)
Seeing my friend's daughter looking at the doll and then at her mom like "is this for me" was the cutest thing ever lol! Later on I got a text that she's been trying to put shoes on her and is really loving her lovey. That, for me, was the best part of this whole experience ^.^

We got to the park around 7pm and were able to meet some characters and ride a few rides before it got late. We had a great time, but I must say being there after the crowds had gone was a little creepy lol.

The first time I went to Disney, with Lamar for our first anniversary, we spent the day riding everything we could, trying to make the most of every moment we were there. So it was pretty cool to be able to just mosey about during After Hours.

I collected a few pressed pennies to add to my growing collection and almost got tricked into pressing a quarter (who the heck wants that?!?)

We spotted a hidden mickey on the way in and then got challenged to find all the hidden mickeys in one of the souvenir shops. Of course I couldn't not accept the challenge! When we found all the mickeys, we got a couple buttons for being victorious!

We saw Celebrate the Magic, Wishes, and Mickey's Electric Parade and I can totally understand the "Disney Spell" that seems to overtake you once you walk in the gates ^.^

We noticed that there were a couple mailboxes along Main Street and the little info box on them said they are active. So of course I had to send a post card! I mailed a little note to Lamar... what can I say, I'm sappy like that :)

I don't know when the next time I'll be able to go to another Disney park, but I'm super glad I got to experience the Magic Kingdom for a second time (especially since it was with super Disney-head Brianna ^.^) . The night ended with a nice cup of Wonderland tea at Brianna's house... at like 4am lol!
I have been quite the slacker blogger and I really need to do better ::insert shame face here:: So May's been over for a week now and we are almost half way through 2016. That is so crazy to me! I always feel like time is flying by whenever I look back through the month to get ready to write these posts. Anywho, on to the highlights!

Monthly Highlights
5/3: Cherie and Kwame's first wedding anniversary! It's a little mind boggling that so many of my friends are married/parents... I guess we are getting 'old' lol ^.^

5/10: I finished a lovey doll and blanket set. It was a lot of fun to challenge myself to create something I've never done before. Stay tuned because I will be sharing more photos and details later on.

5/19: Brianna and I went to Disney After Hours. We got to go on rides that normally have an hour+ wait time and meet Mickey and a handful of princesses. It was pretty cool for a Disney newb like myself.

5/26: I crochet and hand-dyed a swimsuit cover up. I started making a red heart pattern, but when it wasn't working out the way I wanted, I decided to frog it out and design my own. I think it came out pretty nicely ^.^ If I do say so myself!

5/27: Happy birthday Tiffany! She's starting her 30 by 30 list and I'm super excited about it!

5/28-29: Over memorial weekend, we celebrated my friend Sheree's bachelorette in Miami. We went out Saturday night, Sheree danced her little heart out. Then on Sunday we went on a boat tour. It was pretty cool. Snapchat was the documentation of choice and it served me well ^.^

5/30: Happy birthday Brianna! She's doing a 25 by 25 ^.^ I kinda feel like a trendsetter! lol

Throughout the Month
- I spent a lot of the month planning Sheree's Miami bachelorette party. I've discovered that I'm not keen on planning things for other people. It's very stressful for me. I must say Saturday night I almost had a panic attack while we were out... ugh
- I was a yarn crafting machine this month! I feel like I was never without a project in my bag, lol. So much so, when I finished up all my projects and had nothing on the go, it was quite weird.

May Goals Recap

1. Finish & deliver the Evy Set - Yes! I did it and little Everly loved her doll!
2. Knit a hat - Yes! I knit the Seaforth Hat. Funny story... after I finished it, I learned that I was doing all my yarn overs wrong. Looks like I need to make another one!
3. Plan Sheree's bachelorette Party - Done!
4. Read one book - Nope...
5. Make grandma's retirement shutterfly book - Nope... But I def need to get a move on this one because the free book offer I have is expiring in June.

June Goals
1. Finish library photo display
2. Do 2 things for 30 in 30
3. Finish Grandma's photobook
4. Create a budget and build up savings
5. Plan get togethers for friends

And that, my friends, was my May in a nutshell. How was your month? What are some things you want to do in June? Reduce the whole of its parts into the simplest terms, getting back to first principles." -Frank Lloyd Wright
Prompt: What simple things in life do you enjoy?

A few years ago, I ran a blog called Golden 24. It was focused on creating and spreading happiness, and one of the things I really loved doing was highlighting simple pleasures :) So today's prompt is taking me back to those posts, and that's a great thing!

Ten Simple Pleasures

A good cup of tea!

Touching all the yarns in a yarn shop

Snuggles with my dogs

Quiet relaxed mornings with Lamar

Listening to music while driving with the windows down

A relaxing bath

Making & baking

Good conversation

Putting things in color order

Finishing a project

There you have it! Ten simple pleasures ^.^ What are some of your simple pleasures?? I'd love to know! Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-36737563128969410612016-05-05T14:00:00.000-04:002016-05-05T14:00:25.929-04:00Hook and Needle Adjacent DreaminI've had a profile on Ravelry for a few years now. I never use to be very active on the site though. Recently, since discovering a love for shawls, I've found myself on there more often drooling over patterns. Within my time on Ravelry, I've amassed quite the library ^.^

Currently I have two projects going, one crochet and the other knit. And lemme tell you, I'm itching to start something new!! So I'm going to plan my next couple projects because actually starting something right now is probably a bit obsessive. lol! I've chosen 2 crochet patterns and 2 knitting ones. So here we go!

1. All Shawl by Doris Chan

Click Photo for Pattern Page (Photo by Doris Chan)

This is a super simple crochet shawl pattern. I really like that the pattern is very flexible, you can make it as long or short as you like and gauge doesn't really matter. It looks like a quick project to make and probably won't take much more than a week.

2. Sonny's Socks by Sonny321

Click Photo for Pattern Page (Photo by fmlcrochet)

I am very interested to see how crochet socks wear and feel. I think if I like the texture I'll definitely have many more handmade socks ^.^ I like the shell stitching on these and they look comfy. We'll soon see!

3. Ventura Wrap by Rebecca Hill

Click Photo for Pattern Page (Photo by MissBecca)

To continue with my love affair with shawls :) I'm going to try knitting this one. It will be my first knit shawl. Allegedly, it's an easy pattern. I'll be the judge lol! But hey, I have youtube and a local yarn store if I get helplessly stuck. I'm excited about this pattern.

4. Seaforth Hat by Karie Westermann

Click Photo for Pattern Page (Photo by David Fraser)

I think this is going to be the most ambitious of all my hook/needle adjacent projects. I'm actually quite nervous to attempt this, but just like the Ventura Wrap, I have youtube and knitters nearby to help me if needed. I really want to make this hat because, 1- it's really pretty and 2- I'm getting a little tired of wearing my same old crochet hats to work. I want to switch it up. Or maybe that means I need to design a new crochet hat... that's a possibility!

So there you have it! Four projects that I will hopefully be starting within the near future ^.^ My Ravelry pattern library is bursting with projects that are inspiring me and I'm so glad that I found that site!

April Highlights
4/1: I got my replacement phone! My Galaxy S5 was stolen at the end of March, but through some research and blessing I was able to replace it with an S6 through upgrade without having a monthly phone payment! Huzzah! Praise God!

4/3: Lamar's cousin Roger got married! I got to be in my first big Ryan family photo and I'm no longer the newest Mrs. Ryan ^.^

4/14: Lamar and I went to the Pentatonix concert. It was a lot of fun and the opening act, Us the Duo, was the best part if you ask me :) It's the only CD I've been playing in my car since.

4/20: Since I've been getting more into knitting, I decided to purchase my first set of fancy needles. I went to a yarn store quite close to me called Knit! and bought a set of Chiaogoo lace tips. Compared to the needles I've been using from Joann's, the Chiaogoos are soooo much better!

4/21: Lamar's school put on 'Hairspray' as their Spring Musical. It was pretty good.

4/29: Ma Sonia and Amber's birthdays!!

4/30: I wore my newest crochet shawl to church and one of the older ladies complimented me on it ^.^

Throughout the Month
- I started Bible Journaling! I've wanted to try it for a while, but I was scared to draw in the Bible... But once I got past the first entry, I was good to go! It's a really meditative practice for me.
- I've been working on the Evy Lovey and Blanket set this month. It's looking very cute!

April Goals Recap
1. Read Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert -- I started it but put it down after a couple chapters. I do want to finish it, so I'm going to give it another go in May.
2. Crochet something Hufflepuff for #23HarryPotterKAL -- nope, I just went with the Ravenclaw socks
3. Volunteer at an animal shelter -- nope, and now my car is acting really stupid so I don't know when I'll be able to do the extra driving.
4. Read Proverbs and Ecclesiastes -- I did this one! But let me tell you, Ecclesiastes was HARD to get through!! I even called my dad (who's a preacher) to confirm that I was understanding the book... It's depressing! Moral of the book: You might as well enjoy your work and life because everything is meaningless and we're all going to die anyway. Thanks Solomon...
5. Back up devices 2 - 4 times in the month -- I'm ashamed... I haven't backed up anything. I keep saying I need to back up my phone because I have SO many photos and videos from the Pentatonix concert and whatnot. The back up will happen today!

May Goals
1. Finish & deliver the Evy Set
2. Knit a hat
3. Plan Sheree's Bachelorette Party
4. Read one book
5. Make grandma's retirement shutterfly book

SO yeah, I do want to focus on taking May slower. Making an effort to make more memories and not just work work work. I want to take more time for me and also do more crafting for me :) What are some of your May goals?Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-42171303243293587002016-04-25T14:00:00.000-04:002016-04-25T14:00:12.964-04:00Wall-Staring and Thoughts: A How I'm Feeling PostRecently I've been having a few up and down days. They're more up than down, but the down bits are tending to be heavy. What is happening is I'll be feeling productive and getting stuff done, and then randomly I feel like I'm dragging weights through a swimming pool and just want to sit or lie down. A couple times I've literally caught myself staring blankly at the walls. Who does that?!? Anywho, the whole reason I'm writing this right now is because I feel myself sliding into a wall-staring sesh.

I think I'm having one of those moments where my desires to do something and do nothing are equal. Making me feel... jittery. Not fun.

So... I don't think I have anything else to say. I am going to do a Bible journal entry. Oh! I finished reading Ecclesiastes this morning. Hallelujah!!!!! That book was rough. The main idea I got, "Everything is meaningless because, good or bad, everyone will die. Every day is a gift from God so enjoy your life and work because this life is all you get."

Takes a bit of wind outta your sails huh? By the time I got halfway through the book, I was just ready to skip the rest. I'm glad I didn't because, chapter 10 picked up with more bits of wisdom (sorta like Proverbs). Then I just powered through the rest, switching between the English Standard Version and Message Bible. So I'm gonna go do some artsy Bible stuff now.

It's interesting how my moods ebb and flow. I think I've been writing on this for 30 mins or so and at the beginning I was quite blah... but now I feel a bit better. Funny how that works.Caleishahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18316147671690057289noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327288992401437759.post-18427322183092429532016-04-22T14:00:00.000-04:002016-04-22T14:00:36.434-04:00Garden Update: New Babies!Last year I started a herb & veggie garden for my 30 Before 30 list. I had lots of seed sprouts at the beginning but by the end of the spring/mid summer, I only had basil, chinese plum, cucumber, and beans left. We ate the beans one Sabbath... all 5 of them lol.

Of the original garden, only the basil and chinese plum have survived the year. The basil has actually blossomed a few times and produced seeds, which I planted. The cool thing about the second generation basil plant was the leaves were much wider than the original. I wonder why that is... Anywho, I have since re-potted all the basil plants together in one big pot - I have this dream of cultivating a big basil bush. That would be awesome! Oh, and the second gen basil plant went to seed and I dropped them in the midst of the pot. Now I have a few THIRD GEN basil plants growing! Eeeeee!!!

Now that the weather has gotten much warmer at night and early morning, I decided to start my new seedlings. I started cucumbers, peppers, and beans from seed, and a lavender plant. The lavender smells soo good! I can't wait until it's larger so I can make tea and hair spritzes from it.
I didn't take any photos of the seed pots of the cucumbers or peppers because they haven't sprouted yet. This pot of green beans is what I'm calling the 'green bean ball'... after I planted seeds in the started pots, I had a bunch of leftover seeds so I tossed them in the pot. They have actually sprouted much better than the seeds in the starter pots. Now I have to figure out how to transplant and separate them into a larger pot. Go figure. I must say, it makes me smile every time I go out to water the garden. I always think "Green beans, may the odds be ever in your favor!" Hopefully, the cucumbers will sprout soon. Hopefully, the garden will get on well. Here's to my garden version 2.0!
So many of the podcasts I watch have connected Etsy shops where they sell yarn, project bags, and other yarn crafting whatnots. The colors of the yarn and all the different looks are absolutely jaw dropping! And so, like the good DIY gal I am, I bought some white sock yarn, wound it into a hank on my niddy noddy, and tried my hand at dying it.
This wasn't my first go at hand-dying. I did some back when I lived in Alabama. That yarn actually got crocheted up into a pretty striped tam. Anyway, I used food coloring and Easter egg dye pellets this time.
I set the yarn to soak in water and white vinegar for a while before going into the dye pot on the stove. The dye bath I made was a bunch of yellow food coloring. When it got up to a simmer, I put in the yarn. I chopped up some Easter egg pellets to sprinkle around for a 'speckled' effect, but I let the water simmer too much and ended up with a more tonal overall color.
I turned off the heat and let the yarn marinate in the pot for about an hour to soak up as much dye as possible. Then it was wash time! I rinsed/ washed the yarn with a bit of dish soap until the water ran clear and set it out in the sun to dry.
I will confess the color isn't exactly what I saw in my head. It came out much more orange because of the pellets. I have a couple more skeins of white yarn to play with and I'm hoping those will be better. I also want to try dying yarn with plants. I think that will be a really cool adventure.
Have you tried hand-dying anything, yarn or otherwise? I've been known to dye clothing when I get tired of them lol :). Other than my gold color, what other colors should I try?

Every so often I like to stop and make a list of the things I'm currently into/up to. The last one I did was last September and I thought it high time to do another. This time instead of just writing a list, I took my chalk markers and camera outside for a little fun ^.^ Enjoy!
Ta-da! That's what I've been into/up to recently. Lots of crafty bits, really really enjoying Hozier's music and the Pandora station that I've been creating based on him, and just feeling very good today. :)
